Preparing tempeh

Tempeh is the all-rounder among meat substitutes. The relatively neutral taste and the fact that tempeh easily absorbs other flavors make this product particularly suitable for use in various dishes from different cuisines.

So whether you're in the mood for pasta, curry, stew or salad, tempeh allows you to put a delicious meal on the table in no time. Below we explain how you can use this versatile meat substitute in a tasty dish.

Step 1: choose the shape

Tempeh is usually bought as a block. If desired, you can cut this into slices, strips or small cubes yourself. You can also crumble tempeh into vegetable "minced meat". Don't feel like or don't have time to cut yourself? Tempeh cubes and minced meat can also be bought ready-made in the supermarket.

Step 2: choose the marinade or spice mix

From Oriental wok dish to Italian pasta, with tempeh the possibilities are endless. You can use a ready-made marinade or spice mix or put it together to your taste. Tasty options for marinating tempeh or spices include soy sauce, ready-to-use wok sauce or spices such as cumin, ginger, cayenne or chili powder. Let the marinade or herbs soak in for a while before you process the tempeh further.

Step 3: choose the method of preparation

After cutting and marinating or seasoning, the tempeh is ready for further processing. The most common way is to simply fry the tempeh in a (wok) pan. Heat some oil and fry the tempeh for about 5 to 10 minutes. You can also bake the tempeh in the oven. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and bake the tempeh for 8 to 10 minutes until crispy. Finally, tempeh can also be deep-fried with sunflower oil in a wok pan or deep fryer. Healthy frying with less oil? Then fry the tempeh in the Airfryer.

There are different types of tempeh cubes available: baked or unbaked and with or without marinade. Minced tempeh is also available in supermarkets. Good choices for those who want to save time, but still want to put a healthy, plant-based meal on the table.
