SBC – Tempting good food
Our history
Our story begins in 1969, when founder Rob van Dapperen meets Mr. Remmert, who was originally from Indonesia. The latter had been producing tempeh for family and friends in the Netherlands since 1949. Partly due to the increasing demand for plant-based food in the 1960s, van Dapperen became interested in the production of tempeh. With the help of his parents and wife, he made and sold tempeh on a small scale from a shop in Rotterdam under the name Vanda. However, the company soon threatened to burst at the seams and was not much later moved to the building in Kerkrade, where it is still located.
Vanda was one of the first producers of tempeh in Europe and remained the largest for a long time with a production of 3000 to 4000 kg per week. In the beginning, sales were mainly aimed at Indonesian customers on the Dutch market, but from 1982 onwards, the tempeh was also exported worldwide. The Van Dapperen family managed to develop a starter culture that to this day ensures the specific, attractive appearance and characteristic taste of SBC's tempeh.
In 1990 Vanda was sold to Mr. Singh. He, in turn, sells the company to Angelo Croci, the current owner. The company will then continue under the name SoyBeanCompany.
